This was a three day group project set at the end of first year, in which we had to create a fanzine, I was in a group with Alice, Amy and Micha and Gemma.
Usually Fanzines are handmade, magazine type publications made by fans for specific topic- such as a band. We decided that it would be interesting to tackle this project from a different angle and decided to base our fanzine on the common things we don’t like/don’t ‘get’ the hype around. We included a varied range of topics, from One Direction, to Benedict Cumberbatch and Fortune Tellers!
I found it lovely working in a group project where you can all collaborate and see how each other approaches design and the varying styles, it was a really enjoyable task.
Gemma created the stamp which we used for the cover, it is deliberately back to front to show how our opinions differ from the common viewpoint. We each created 4 double page spreads for the fanzine, which would then all be brought together at the end.
After we all listed the things that we didn’t really ‘get’ the hype around/hated about some aspects of society, we all chose 4 that we would take forward and work on, we all went for quite a handmade grungy, punk style, typical of the origins of fanzines. I used ripped paper, hand carved stamps, photocopiers, hand drawn type etc. to get the aesthetic effect. We designed a contents page using a scratchy, dry marker pen (which added to the punk effect we were creating) from here we included pages covering a wide variety of topics such as One Direction, High Heels, Costa and Starbucks, Fortune Tellers, Twilight, Twitter, Benedict Cumberbatch, Avengers, John Green Novels, Instagram, Cheeky Nandos, and finally Facebook
‘Instagrub’ based on our dislike of all the endless food photos on instagram.
‘Do you twit’ Twitter is seemingly full of opinionated people and ‘idiots’
‘Costa-lot’ why are coffee places so overpriced?!
