As part of our summer projects, we were given a brief to chose a story from the news and create a poster from it with one rule: we must not use any words.
On August 22nd 2015, at the Shoreham Air Show, a 60 year old Hawker Hunter jet fighter was just about to pull out from the classic ‘Loop-the-Loop’ manoeuvre when something went tragically wrong, causing it to crash onto the busy A27 road.
Over the next few hours and days, it became apparent that 11 people had died on that road. Ordinary people just travelling the road between Brighton and Worthing. I have shown the Hunter as it would have appeared seconds before impact, whilst its signature vapour trail has transformed into a floral wreath as a forewarning of the tragedy that would inevitably unfold seconds later. Additionally, the plane casts a coffin-shaped shadow onto the ground.
The images are intentionally line-drawn and void of infill, reflecting the emptiness associated with the senseless loss of so many lives.
